Winnie Mahlangu Passed Away

Winnie Mahlangu Passed Away: The country mourns the death of veteran Ukhozi FM radio personality Winnie Busisiwe Mahlangu, who died on Thursday, January 27, at the age of 88.

Mahlangu will be regarded as the South African Broadcasting Corporation’s first black female broadcaster (SABC).

She began her career in 1962 at the then-Radio Bantu. Mahlangu, who was born in 1934 in Witbank, Mpumalanga, worked at the SABC at the height of apartheid, when prejudice against women was rampant.

She was known by her nickname, “uMafungwase”, a name she got from former radio presenter and Mahlangu’s colleague KE Masinga.
