Raised initially by her aunt in Soshanguve, Northern Pretoria, her mother faced challenges raising her children, prompting her to hand over Nokuthula to her aunt. As a teenager, Nokuthula discovered more about her family and her late father, Mavuso. Despite reconnecting with her mother later on, she faced the loss of her mother in September 2015.


Nokuthula Ledwaba embarked on her acting career at nineteen, participating in various children’s and educational theater productions across South Africa and the UK. Her debut role was in the show Wild Child Lu. However, she gained widespread recognition for her portrayal of ‘Tshidi Khuse’ in the popular television series Rhythm City in 2007, earning a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the 3rd South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) in 2009.

In 2018, she ventured into the television series The River, playing the role of ‘Angelina’ across multiple seasons. Apart from these prominent roles, she has also appeared in series such as Abomama as ‘Mapule’ and Ambitions as ‘Thembi’. Her credits also include supportive roles in serials like Hard Copy, Backstage, Umlilo, and Scandal!. Notably, she played a lead role as ‘Kunta Kinte’s mother’ in the remake of the original 1977 version of the American mini-series Roots.

In the drama series Umlilo, she starred as ‘Dumile’, a city girl from Soweto navigating life as the second wife in a polygamous marriage.
