Ford has worked at the station for the previous 24 years. He said he was on his way to Heart’s Green Point studios for his normal 12-3pm lunchtime show on Monday when he received a phone call from programme manager Vernon Nel alerting him of his layoff.

The phone call arrived barely 40 minutes before the start of his show.

“I got a phone call saying there was a letter I needed to read,” Ford explained. “And the letter states that my services are no longer necessary.”

Ford immediately called Renee Redelinghuys, the station manager, for clarification. “I phoned her just to make sure I understood what she was saying.”

He said Redelinghuys informed him that his contract had been terminated with immediate effect.

Ford’s firing is directly related to his claims in a Weekend Argus Sunday exclusive that intimidation by a top boss led to his decision to leave the station. His departure from the station was scheduled for the end of February of the following year.
