Ami Faku has arrived to shake things up, and the numbers are pouring in to back her up.

The Eastern Cape-born singer’s debut album, Imali, was released in 2019 to rave acclaim. The 11-track project provides listeners with a lovely introduction to Faku’s excellent songwriting abilities, which she employs to narrate stories about love and life in her native Xhosa language. The CD is lush and elegant, with Ami Faku pitching her own tent within the local music environment. And it’s a mood that differs from the prevailing sounds that occupy the most of the space and clout.

Instead, the songbird, who has previously received a Gold plaque for her collaboration with El Musician’s ‘Into Ingawe,’ maintains a genuine sound as she gave a great set of lovely Afro-Soul songs with the vocal and lyrical virtuosity we need to preserve the less funky sections of the game.

It was profitable.

Ami Faku was the only newcomer to emerge on Spotify’s list of the Top 100 most streamed female artists in South Africa towards the end of the year. It’s a fate that will see her join the ranks of established musos Shekhinah and Lady Zamar, both of whom have created quite a name for themselves as digital favorites.
