Origin and history

Formerly known as “Radio 5”, the station evolved from LM Radio, a commercial station based in neighboring Mozambique’s Lourenço Marques (now Maputo).  After Mozambique obtained independence, Radio 5 went on the air for the first time on October 13, 1975. The station began broadcasting in the medium wave band in Welgedacht, Maraisburg, Pietersburg, Durban, Bloemfontein, Brackenfell, Port Elizabeth, and Grahamstown from transmitters in Welgedacht, Maraisburg, Pietersburg, Durban, Bloemfontein, Brackenfell, Port Elizabeth, and Grahamstown.

It was the SABC’s fifth national radio channel at the time, following Radio Sud-Afrika, Radio South Africa, Springbok Radio, and Radio Bantu.

It was rebranded “5FM” in 1992, and its current logo features a crimson “5” and superscripted “FM” within a circle, with the words “The Power of” inscribed along the circle’s upper periphery. Music is at the center of 5FM’s format, which is supplemented with news, sports, and traffic, and caters to a diverse range of tastes for a young audience.
